Dravid resigns as captain

Rahul Dravid has relinquished his leadership of India with immediate effect.

BBCI president Sharad Pawar confirmed that Dravid wished to step down before Australia's upcoming tour.

"He said 'The selectors have placed faith in me to lead continuously for two years and I am grateful for that'", Pawar said.

"He said he would like the concentrate on his batting and the opportunity should be given to a new person to lead the side."

Dravid had led India in 20 Tests and 62 ODIs since taking on the position from Sourav Ganguly two years ago - winning eight Tests but having less success with the one day side.

His most recent triumph as captain was leading the side to a memorable Test series victory in England earlier this summer.

His darkest hour came in the 2007 Cricket World Cup when India failed to reach the Super Eight stage of the tournament - losing to Bangladesh in the process.

Dilip Vengsarkar - chairman of selectors - said that a decision on who will replace Dravid will be made on September 18.
